'Budak Kelantan' - a bit preachy but still ok!

WE all know films can be used as a tool to preach like getting audience to go back to the righteous path or at least not behave abnormally.

However, having watched the latest film titled 'Budak Kelantan' (Kelantan Boy), directed by first-time director Wan Azli Wan Jusoh, no one can deny this film is simply trying to preach or 'reach out' to our ugly youth (not just Kelantanese youth only) and try to straighten them and get them back on the right track.

And how do you do this? You will probably get the answer at the end of the film, if you are lucky?

With limited budget, it would be unfair to question why this film is treated like a drama format. What more when it tries to weave in social caustic problem like drugs, gambling, premarital sex and alcoholism which could trigger a youth's lost-soul.

Not enough, you are most likely to laugh, smile and even shudder especially during the sex assault scene which showed Jaha, played by impressive newcomer Mohd Asrulfaizal, who forced an underaged girl to make love to him.

And later, he even asked a friend to help him savour the grouse satisfaction.

You will be excused if you have mixed feeling as this emotions will not fade away. Just as you are about to learn the girl's ignorance and shameful stupidity, you will be appalled to find out that 'the rape victim' actually believes Jaha will take care of her despite what he had done.

Do you feel sorry that Jaha sent her straight to the brothel hell? I wasn't. Not only was this so predictable, it just gets to me such ignorance being exploited and manipulated to the maximum.

Believe it or not, this is the integral part of the film where audience will be amazed by Mohd Asrulfaizal's undisputed 'evilness'. This theatre actor is so adept and convincing in his role that you might suggest to hire only theater actors from now on to improve the standard of acting in local films, especially in high-budgeted films in the future. And why not?

Later on in the film, you might be mad at the director for depicting women so low and degrading. But before you start thinking of yelling at him, his sensible explanation - "The world today is crowded with 'wild wolves' waiting for their victims" in every single dialogue, would just shut your gap.

On the other hand, you JUST have to agree with the idea of showing good quality in an inoffensive way so as to put him back to the right path.

But how? Well when they see Buchek's (played by Danny x-factor) straight, naive and unassuming character who asks permission to pray when Jaha forces him to gamble. This plus when Buchek is beaten due to Jaha's unsettled case.

Apart from those good looks, Danny's acting is pretty much mediocre. There is nothing to be proud of as he got a 'very safe character'. And nothing much to explore in terms of emotions too as the part only requires him to be a 'slow and steady' guy.

Same goes with Buchek's girlfriend Che' Nor played by singer turned actress Bienda. Her character is also non-challenging. Che Nor refused to fulfill her lover's wishes to leave him for the sake of Jaha's future.

So what happens to the 'uncaring society'? Will they start to care if troubled lad like Jaha, dies after encountering motorcycle accident? Go figure yourself.

But if you hear complaints that you cant make out where the story is heading, well for justification, some scenes have been chopped off. And this act have certainly disrupted the flow of the story.

Caution: Only those who can put their thinking caps on are advised to watch Budak Kelantan. Otherwise, you would probably be ranting the Kelantanese dialects long after the show.

'Budak Kelantan' general screening starts 30th of October at major cinemas.
