AList artistes show no fear in Gentayangan

FOR any film director, it is very satisfying for him or her to watch their high-paid stuntman hang in the air higher than a palm tree or jump off the window crazily, as it is promised to give jaw-dropping shots.

Yet, they certainly don’t feel the same way when their main casts take that life-risking job away from the experts, what more shooting at someone-is-watching-you area.

Few years back, a cameraman of Jangan Pandang Belakang film died in the scene of jumping off from the verge of balcony.

Although the production team had explained the cause of the death, until today many keep speculating unwelcome spirits at their shooting area might be behind of the incident.

The director of an expected to be the scariest Malay horror flick this year Gentayangan- briefly it is about a battle between a white power and black power –, Zulkifli M Osman afraid his main casts will repeat the history.

He can detect the spirit presence the minute some of his main casts consisting Rusdi Ramli, Yasmin Hani, Abu Bakar, Nasir Bilal Khan are attached to stunt safety-belt at 18-year old abandoned house compound in Serom, Muar, Johor.

"These artistes went berserk when they saw the house. They said the spooky atmosphere could reinforce more scary feeling into their acting.

"I swear to god, they smiled to their ears when they were hanged in the air," said Zul.

"The excitement could be driven by the fact they are doing almost all the stunts for the first time in respective career. I couldn’t resist their request," he added.

Judging from the height of the crane that being placed before the house, many reporters were wondered was it ok for the production utilising the ‘danger space’ to that extent?

"I know it is pretty crossing the line right? So far the keeper of the house, Pak Din said we are utilising the area in the very modest way, I mean we are not blocking any spirit path.

"Still, I always remind my casts not to be so excited when doing their stunts. Anything can’t happen when we are not respecting the place."

Behind his safe answer, he actually was concealing his wariness ever since there were several of times the main casts informed him about their spine-chilling experience while acting in the house.

"There was a scene of Hani had to be confined in the room and when I looked at the monitor, her face suddenly looked so scrunched up.

"After I said cut, she rushed to me and said she felt someone was watching her.

"Since then I do feel goose bumps sometimes. But I have to bear in mind that this is just a part of the challenges in directing horror flick. It is pretty creepy, yet, interesting."

Realising how creepy-crawly the place is, no wonder he takes more than an hour just to shoot less than 30 second stunts to make sure his casts landing on the ground safely.

But let say suddenly the unwanted spirits create chaos as they feel mad on how his team using the house, so what he is going to do then?

"Every morning, I pray to god for our safety, but if it still happen, who knows it could inject ‘unexplainable spooky’ mood into our flick, something like Exorcist film," Zul claimed.

The villagers believe the spirits are feeling uneasy with his crews’ presence, as since they started shooting, the residents are reliving their nightmare that had been toned down years ago.

"Suddenly many strange incidents happened such as couple days ago a heart-broken woman killed herself on a bridge near to the house.

"No one knew what really had happened. We believe it could be caused by the spirits, who are angry with the whole thing. I advice Zul to be more careful, as the spirits are watching them." said a lad who wanted to be known only as Man.

For Zul, he has to be optimistic about it, otherwise, he couldn’t finish his next shooting at other hunted houses in Kuala Lumpur and Melaka.

"I can’t blame the spirits, I mean we are filming their lives, so it is natural for them to chip in, right?" he chuckled.
